From the planning stages of Briar's Creek on John's Island, our resort has collaborated with Audubon International to develop Briar's Creek as an environmentally friendly, natural sanctuary. The work has paid off, earning Briar's Creek a distinction as the first Certified Silver Audubon Signature Sanctuary in South Carolina. As part of the certification program, Audubon International provides guidelines, education, and assistance to Briar's Creek for the purpose of practicing good stewardship of the sophisticated and native beauty on Johns Island. This program is a long-term commitment from the planning stages through future maintenance that will distinguish Briar's Creek's golf course from other world class courses for years to come.
Audubon International is a non-profit organization for environmental education based in Selkirk, New York. The organization carries nearly 100 years of tradition, dating back to its original founder, Theodore Roosevelt. Rebirthed in 1987, Audubon International envisions communities becoming more sustainable by practicing responsible management of land, water, wildlife and natural resources. Today, the organization protects over 1 million acres across the globe.
"Many planning bodies across the country don't fully understand what is involved in building a golf course," says Nancy Richardson, Director of the Audubon Signature Program. "They know that there are environmental issues. But what are those issues? Who should deal with them? That sets them off looking for someone to help, and we naturally pop up."
Briar's Creek is one of a small percentage of golf course communities that has taken the extra effort and expense of meeting the Silver Member criteria. Mismanaged or poorly planned golf courses can threaten ecosystems with chemicals, pesticides and excess water waste. But with careful design and a willingness to put in a little extra effort, Briar's Creek has designed a golf course that's not only safe for the ecosystem, but is actually working to improve it. The end result is a course that seamlessly merges a golfer's experience with Mother Nature.
Certification is more than a decision: it is a process. To begin, Audubon International assesses the initial site of consideration. After the onsite evaluation, Audubon Environmental Services, Inc. works closely with planners, architects, and managers to develop a Natural Resource Management Plan. This comprehensive guidance document assesses the natural resources and environmental impacts associated with land developments. Furthermore, the document provides strategies for addressing natural resource issues including:
Throughout the major phases of the project, Audubon International visits the site to oversee the implementation of the plan. In addition, Audubon International extensively trains and educates construction and operational personnel regarding the practical methods of following through with the Natural Resource Management Plan.
